Cherry blossom season—sakura—is Japan at its most celebrated. For a few weeks each spring, roadsides, riverbanks, and mountain passes transform into tunnels of pale pink and white. Viewed from a motorcycle, without the walls of a tour bus or the crowding of popular parks, it is something else entirely.

The Shonan coast, Hakone, and the area around Mt. Fuji offer some of the most scenic sakura riding in the country—and all of it is within two hours of Tokyo. This guide covers when to come, where to ride, and how to make the most of the season.

“There is no better way to experience sakura than at riding pace—slow enough to see the petals fall, fast enough to feel the season in motion.”

When Do the Cherry Blossoms Bloom?

Typical Bloom Timing — Shonan & Hakone Area

Late MarchTokyo and the Shonan coast begin to bloom. Coastal routes peak first. Early AprilPeak bloom across most of Kanagawa Prefecture. Best window for Shonan and lower Hakone. Mid AprilHigher elevations bloom later — Hakone and the Fuji Five Lakes area reach peak. Snow still possible on mountain passes. Late AprilPetals falling (hanafubuki). Still beautiful, especially on forest roads.

Exact timing shifts by one to two weeks year to year depending on winter temperatures. The Japan Meteorological Corporation publishes annual sakura forecasts from January onward — worth checking before you book.

Recommended Routes

Route 1 — Shonan Coastal Ride

Half Day
~60 km Coastal & City Beginner Friendly

The Shonan coast is Japan’s Pacific Riviera—a stretch of seaside towns, surf culture, and wide ocean views running from Kamakura to Enoshima and beyond. In cherry blossom season, the inland streets of Kamakura and the park areas around Enoshima island bloom brilliantly.

This is the most accessible route for first-time riders in the area, with gentle roads and plenty of cafés and rest stops. Combine with a walk through Kamakura’s temple grounds for the full spring experience.

Route 2 — Hakone Loop

Full Day
~120 km Mountain Intermediate

The Hakone loop takes you up into volcanic mountain scenery, past Ashi Lake, and along winding passes with views that open and close as the road curves. Cherry trees line the lower approaches to Hakone in early April; higher sections bloom later into mid-April.

The Izu Skyline and the roads around Sengokuhara are particularly scenic. Hot spring towns (onsen) make natural rest stops—some permit day-use bathing for visitors on motorcycles.

Route 3 — Fuji Five Lakes Circuit

Full Day
~180 km Mountain & Lakeside Intermediate

The classic. Riding the circuit around the five lakes at the base of Mt. Fuji during cherry blossom season is among the most photographed experiences in Japan—and for good reason. The combination of pink sakura, blue lake water, and the white cone of Fuji behind them is genuinely extraordinary.

Chureito Pagoda near Fujiyoshida is the iconic viewpoint and worth the short hike. Arrive early—by 8 AM if possible—before tour coaches arrive. The lakeside roads themselves are quiet enough even during peak season.

Practical Tips for Spring Riding

What to keep in mind

  • Book early — spring is our busiest season, and availability fills weeks in advance
  • Dress in layers — mornings in Hakone can be 5–8°C even in April; warmth is essential
  • Watch for weekend traffic around Fuji — Saturday and Sunday can see heavy congestion on Route 139
  • Rain is common in April — riding gear matters; our rentals include jacket and gloves
  • Petals on the road can be slippery when wet — reduce speed on corners after rain
  • Check Mt. Fuji visibility forecasts the evening before — clear mornings are the rule, not the guarantee

Combine with a Guided Tour

Spring routes around Mt. Fuji and Hakone involve more navigation complexity than the coastal roads. If it’s your first time in the area, our Guided Tour Plan pairs you with a local guide who knows the seasonal viewpoints, the quiet alternatives to congested roads, and the right time of day to be at each location.

Private custom tours are also available for riders who want a specific itinerary—perhaps combining two routes over two days, or focusing exclusively on the Fuji area. Get in touch and we’ll plan something around your schedule and experience level.
